as you have probably gathered by now, this blog is about a wedding. our wedding. talk to anyone we know and they'll all say this has been a long time coming. just about four years ago, josh and i met during a summer long internship at hcjb global in quito, ecuador. josh was there to complete his internship requirement for school, and to revisit the place where he had spent the first fifteen years of his life, the place he still refers to as home. i was there for an adventure, to get outside of the things that were familiar and to experience something entirely different. we both worked in the communications building--josh helped with radio production and i wrote for the organization's communication pieces. my first day on training for the job i was greeted by a cool curly-haired guy with a t-shirt that said, "y b normal?" little did i know how well that shirt represented what i was getting myself into from that moment on. a summer of hiking mountains, getting pick-pocketed, being plagued by the "gringo hop," volunteering at an orphanage, cooking for homeless families, and going days without good plumbing can really bring two people together! as cool as our adventures were, the best part of that trip was being able to experience so much of what shaped josh over the years. seeing his childhood homes, meeting friends who were there when josh was born, being in the hospital where he was born (and where he revisited countless times for injuries and emergencies), listening to his dad's old radio tapes and his family's old cd's, being involved in the church where he grew up, taking the bus to the beach where his family used to vacation, hearing endless stories of all the trouble he and his brother caused, playing soccer at his elementary school, and just taking in all the sights and sounds that are home to him. leaving all of that at the end of the summer was a pretty painful ordeal. the good news was that we were in school only two hours away so we made a habit of the commute each weekend over the next two years (with an added complication of studying abroad for a semester, but josh came to visit for a week and experience all the sights and sounds of my home there). lucky for me, jendi (my roomate and josh's brother's girlfriend at the time, now wife) made the same commute each weekend to visit nate so it made for some convenient bonding time along the pennsylvania turnpike (i am so thankful for her and for the time that we had on those drives). after graduation, i moved back to massachusetts to start and job and josh followed not to long after. a year and a half of LOTS of ups and downs trying to get settled up here and we're ready to take the plunge.
